I Would Describe Myself As
"I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free..."
Or to update my favorite hymn, I'm lucky enough to be physically fit and free of money worries. I like coming home to the grapevine-covered house that you almost can't see from the street, and I like leaving it too, especially chasing after traditional song. Five years ago, when I suddenly felt very old and unwanted (OK, so I was "dumped") going to France as I'd gone decades earlier took a large leap of faith. Wasn't I getting a bit old for this unchartered, solo rambling? Well no, as it turned out, I wasn't. And thank God I took the leap.
I'm not looking for someone to carry my baggage or keep up with me on the trail or fix my computer mess-ups (nice as that would be!). I'd simply like to share a few things, from gardening to good food to Gilbert and Sullivan--all the stuff of life (or some of it) that I'd enjoy even more in compatible company. Someone with enthusiasms of their own and maybe a few contradictions. I'm a mess of them myself: a tree-hugger with a "hug-a-logger-you'll-never-go-back-to-trees" bumper sticker; an animal lover feeling more and more in sympathy with real hunters; a joyful risk-taker with a yearning for safe harbor... I guess sometimes I just want to be hugged. Especially at the end of the day, when my go-it-alone freedom is pretty cold comfort and taking a book to bed, well, it does seem an awful waste of me...
