Am 53 yrs. old (or young, as I prefer to think of it), divorced, with two teens who spend every other weekend w/ me.
Fairly attractive, in good shape (5'9", 135 lbs.), reasonably intelligent, very well educated, extremely honest - sometimes to a fault, including bouts of tactlessness, very polite (always apologize - repeatedly - for such tactlessness), kind, generous, warm, compassionate, caring and sensual. Did I mention that am also exceedingly modest? (Oh well - that's not too likely on these sites!)
Originally English, still make the odd mistake w/ American slang here and there, but not nearly as often as before. Also retain something of offbeat sense of humour which is one reason I still like the old Monty Python skits, Life of Brian, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, and the like.
But have learned to enjoy American coffee, though do not yet like it black.
Do not smoke, drink to excess, take drugs, overeat or engage in any other self-destructive behaviour. (Wasn't doing that sort of thing to ourselves one of the main purposes of adolescence?) To be blunt, would greatly prefer not to date anyone who still indulges in any of these behaviours.
Very active, love hiking, dancing, swimming, fishing, camping, and backpacking. Also like tennis (need practice though), ping pong, pool and sometimes bowling. Avid reader, also enjoy chess, word games, and some card games, though don't gamble.
Am a teacher, and love most parts of teaching, and students. Not too keen on the paperwork aspect of teaching, but someone has to do it. Even after retiring, I expect to continue to substitute teach for years to come, since I really do enjoy teaching and kids.
Personally, far more spiritual than religious, politically somewhat liberal, and ecologically green. That said, it's my feeling that your political and religious opinions and beliefs
are your concern, since I don't intend to try to convert you. All I ask in return is that you don't try to convert me, or worse - "save" me! (Please believe me, it's hopeless anyway!)
Though I enjoy stimulating and interesting discussions of everything from philosophy, history, current affairs, ecology, I've no wish to convert anyone to my views. Realistically, since am registered independent, the chances of my agreeing with any one person on all political, religious, and ecological issues, are rather slender, and that is an understatement. But I believe that two of the key ingredients of lasting relationships (including simple friendships) are tolerance and mutual respect. So long as we use those key tools in all our interesting and often amusing discussions about everything under and beyond the sun, with dashes of humour and spice, we will probably enjoy ourselves. Among my friends from various nations, are members of such diverse groups as the Welsh Nationalist Party, Labour, Tories, Liberals, Greens, and in this country, firm Democrats and equally staunch Republicans, occasional Greens, and Vegans. But since we are all tolerant of each others' views and because we respect each other, we enjoy staying in touch and discussing all sorts of things.
If you read all of this wordy description, thank you very much. If you didn't, well, at least you know I am sometimes wordy as well as extremely forthright!

Realize this is overworked. But I really feel that in order to get to know one another, the ideal first date should include conversation in public, well-lit, and quiet setting such as a public park, coffee shop or small cafe of some sort. Weather permitting, a walk or even a short hike outdoors is fun, too, providing the area is well-frequented.

For a long while, have wanted to try mountain climbing with current gear. Decades ago, used to do it casually, but used out of date gear even then (minimal expansion bolts, no rock drill, etc.).

My goal in life is to continue to contribute positively to our society, while enjoying myself, appreciating the humour in our ever more complex lives and world, and continuing to take time to "smell the roses, as the saying goes. Am a relatively simple person, so my contributions to our world have not, and will not, be huge. But if I can enjoy myself with friends and family, while continuing to contribute to this world, I will have completed my mission in life.
Though I would like very much to have a long-term relationship with the right person, that is secondary to my goal of contributing positively to our world, and living with enjoyment, fun and humour. Though I fully realize that all relationships take work, am not too keen on relationships that are all Sturm and Drang (storm and melodrama), as it were. Personally, I prefer serene companionship to that sort of passionate love-hate relationship.

Going for a hike, and having a nice, basic picnic en route, or returning from the hike to have a nice picnic. A truly ideal hike would, in the summer, take us up high enough so as to escape the heat, or take us somewhere where we could swim after the hike and before the picnic. That way, we would get warmer while picnicking. The best way to end that day would be to go out dancing somewhere - at least until we know one another better.

Looking for someone who knows how to appreciate life's quirks, including even seeing the good parts of things, which are not, on the whole, positive experiences. Am looking for someone with a good, unintimidated and robust sense of humour and appreciation of irony, but who can demonstrate empathy and compassion, as well.
Loyalty is a must, as I am completely and utterly loyal, when I give myself to someone fully. Since it takes a while for me to feel this free with anyone, patience would also be a strong point, since am fairly conservative in my behaviour.
Since I am completely honest, it would be very desirable if the other person were the same. Of course, a bit of tact here and there (when discussing my family members, for example) would not hurt, as being tactful myself would undoubtedly benefit me as well as you.
